Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

Good morning, colleagues!  I have a very important request—something that has a direct and immediate impact on the lives of students/ECPs. I need you to take action, and then lend your help to spread this message, please.

Our nation’s only Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) is a program that promises to absolve someone’s remaining federal student loan debt after they make 120 monthly income-contingent payments while working in virtually any position for a qualified employer (e.g., government, 501c3 non-profit, etc.). The program is in danger of being cut altogether or significantly restricted. WE CANNOT STAND FOR THAT. It would be a devastating loss to current and future psychologists who choose a career of public service (likely at reduced pay relative to corporate/industry), in exchange for support from the government to make that sacrifice possible.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet 20+ advocates here in the APA building who were learning the ins and outs of PSLF. This morning, they are on Capitol Hill volunteering their time for you and me. They are sharing data from several different sources that demonstrate how ECPs are committing our careers to public service and how our debt has outpaced those of our predecessors.  (View slides here.)

Please! Read below, click to personalize a message to your U.S. Representative, and SHARE this with your listservs, co-workers, fellow alums, students, divisions, and psych associations.   Your actions will take just a minute, but could mean staving off years of burden.
